Upper San Pedro Valley Alluvial Aquifer: The San Pedro River valley contains a shallow alluvial aquifer closely connected to river baseflow. This connection is ecologically significant — the San Pedro supports one of the last perennial desert rivers in the American Southwest and is a critical migratory bird corridor. Pumping from this aquifer reduces river baseflow, which is why ADWR, the Nature Conservancy, and the Department of Defense have all been involved in managing groundwater use near the river.

Mountain Front Recharge Zones: The Huachuca Mountains themselves generate significant recharge from high-elevation precipitation and snowmelt. Wells in the mountain-front zone (the sloped terrain between the mountains and the valley floor) often have good yields from fractured granite and the coarse alluvial fan deposits at the base of the range.

Typical Well Depths: 200–500 feet for domestic wells in the valley; shallower in mountain-front settings.

Fort Huachuca’s Water Management

Fort Huachuca is the county’s largest groundwater pumper and has been subject to Section 7 consultation under the Endangered Species Act regarding impacts to the San Pedro River’s federally protected species. The fort has significantly reduced its per-capita water use and participates in recharge projects to offset its pumping.
